A building contractor directly opposite Kairaba Police Station has blocked the public from accessing Kairaba Avenue by dumping their unsorted construction waste on a road right next to traffic lights. The road in question is a small access road opposite Kairaba Police Station and connected to the main Kairaba Avenue. On Monday 28th June 2021 I observed that the road was filled with all manner of sharp and bulky construction waste material which can be seen in the images and videos.
After observing the waste blocking the road to Kairaba Avenue I spoke to a Gambian Site Manager who informed me that his superior Chinese Site Manager had instructed for the waste to be thrown outside to level the ground ahead of planned road works.
After hearing this explanation, I queried the use of sharp and bulky unsorted construction waste as an inappropriate choice of construction material to level the ground. I informed the Gambian Site Manager that such construction practices are not acceptable and that if the waste was not removed immediately the authorities would be alerted that their construction waste is blocking the public from accessing Kairaba Avenue.
I spoke to at least three workers at the construction site including the Gambian Site Manager who also seemed unhappy with the instructions to dump their unsorted construction waste onto the road. Inside their construction site was noticeably clean, but outside their site was the complete opposite.
I asked them if a Gambian Contractor would dare to instruct for waste to be thrown outside on the road like this in China or Senegal and they all responded that such poor construction practices would not be permitted in any country where citizens take pride in their environment.
I informed them that the construction waste should be cleared immediately without delay and failure would see the authorities called in to address this situation.
Here is a video of the area in question.
