FROM KANILAI TO POTOMAC RUNS BLOOD MONEY Transparency, accountability and probity became the anthem of Jammeh’s Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council (AFPRC) and his willfully ignorant support base. Remember their slogan: “soldiers with a difference? In the span of 19 years; treachery, aggression and pomposity defines the Jammeh regime. The July 22, 1994 coup defamed Jawara for corruption, cruelty against the Gambian people and the squandering of the country’s “wealth” to build mansions in England. One of the alleged mansions was a humble 5 bedrooms bungalow on 15 Birchen Lane in Haywards Heath, West Sussex; no comparison to Jammeh’s Potomac mansion and several other properties outside the Gambia. In fact, Jawara no longer owns that property.…

By Sulayman Jeng, UK As a young lad growing up in the provincial town of Basse, I was of the believe that Jawara was superhuman with insurmountable spiritual powers. It was narrated in some quarters that on the day of his birth, his father found a ship full of cash while on fishing. On his return home, he named his new born son KAIRABA. It never occurred to me at that tender age that Jawara was a surname. I also heard that he possessed powers to make him invisible when and where he desired. Moreover, he can choose to be…

By Mathew K. Jallow As a country, much of what shapes the politics we observe is not based on reality, but on the flawed way our brains process what we see around us. We draw conclusions that rely on limited information, which often result in a myopic representation of the reality. In my experience living in and learning about various totalitarian regimes, the one constant is their inherent administrative weaknesses and fragility. Because dictatorial regimes use fear as an instrument of gaining control and compliance, they are able to create a false sense of stability, strength and invincibility.

By Mathew K Jallow Exactly thirteen years ago, sixteen young Gambian students’ lives was cut short by the crackle of machine-gun-fire. The morning began uneventfully as citizens went about their normal business. In down-town Serekunda, the hustle and bustle that gave notoriety to The Gambia’s largest metropolis lived …up to its image of confusion and disorder. Two miles to the east of Serekunda, where the Kairaba Avenue, the Birkama Highway and the Serekunda/Banjul road converge, and the spectacular display of human activity spoke loudly of hope, but also of subdued desperation, no one could predict the tragedy that was about…

By Mathew K. Jallow, Exactly four years this week, Yahya Jammeh’s witch-hunting exercise was terrorizing Gambians. We dug into the archives in memory of all those who lost their lives and suffered permanent mental and physical injuries. It was a week of disquiet and frustration; a week that began with a bang and ended with a thud. Before the week was over, the Gambia was once again in the spotlight, and subjected to the curiosity of an international community fixated as much on Yahya Jammeh’s medieval behavior as it was held captive by the asinine character and the maddening comedy…
