For Immediate Release. Kololi, The Gambia:
The friends and families of the forcibly disappeared victims under the 22year- dictatorship in The Gambia will hold a vigil to remember lost loved ones. This vigil is organized by the Gambian Center for Victims of Human Rights Violations to commemorate the loss of their colleague victims.
The event is intended to communicate a strong message to the government of the New Gambia and to the Minister of the Interior, in particular, that it is their duty to immediately communicate the fate of the disappeared and to return remains of the exhumed bodies to their families.
More than a year ago, the Ministry of the Interior exhumed several remains of Gambians who lost their lives in standing up to end the Jammeh regime. To date, families and friends of these victims have no information about the whereabouts or fate of the deceased.
The families and friends of the disappeared have an alienable human right to mourn the loss of their loved ones and to bury them with dignity. The Gambia Victim Center, with the families of the forcibly disappeared, have petitioned the Ministry of the Interior tirelessly for the truth without success.
The time for waiting is over: the truth must be told and the remains returned. And this must happen now!
Ends.
