Press Conference for the 2018 Commemoration of April 10 and 11 Student Massacre
10th and 11th April 2018 will mark the 18th anniversary of the fatal student demonstration that resulted in the shooting to death of 14 schoolchildren and a Red Cross volunteer and injuries to dozens more. Even though a commission of enquiry on the unfortunate incident concluded that the deaths were due to gunshots and that shooting emanated from security forces, yet the Gambia Government went ahead to enact the Indemnity Act in 2001 which effectively shielded perpetrators from justice. Eighteen years later, victims continue to cry for the truth and justice.
In light of this, the Gambian civil society under the auspices of TANGO in collaboration with the
April 10 and 11 Memorial Foundation will host a press conference in commemoration of the
massacre. The press conference will be held at the TANGO Conference Hall in Fajara on
Wednesday 11 April 2018 starting at 10am sharp (No Gambian Time)!
The theme of the press conference is ‘April 10 and 11: 18 Years Later, Victims Still Cry for
Justice! I hereby have the singular honor to kindly request for media coverage of the press conference for public
consumption.
We hold the view that there is the need to re-open the report of the April 10 and 11 Commission of Inquiry to ensure that the recommendations therein are implemented. In the same vein we are advocating for the repeal of the Indemnity Act 2001 to ensure justice is finally done.
While counting on your usual cooperation, please accept our esteemed considerations.
Yours Sincerely
……………………………………….
Mr. Ousman Yabo
Executive Director
