Gainako has confirmed from family that former Finance Minister Mambury Njie has been rearrested. Mr. Njie who has served in various high profile ministries was on July 3 acquitted and discharged by the High Court of The Gambia after undergoing several months of trial on a two-count charge of economic crime, and one count of negligence of official duty. He was let go without any preconditions.
There were no reasons given why Mr. Njie was rearrested again by NIA officials. Reliable sources disclosed that Mr. Njie was constantly being trailed by the authorities since his acquittal. His travel documents were seized by the administration and was privately warned not to leave the country.
Mambury’s arrest did not surprise many people as the administration is known for its discontent with court rulings that free citizens on charges of economic crimes. As we go to press Mr. Njie remains in custody with no new charges brought before the courts.
