Maya Has Come Home to Rest!
By Yero Jallow
We have come home to rest
In that underground mansion alone
Alone by ourselves
With our prides of achievements
Our swords and uniforms deeply soaked in blood
Our body skeletons remain an earthly monument
While our spirits rise to the high heavens.
We have come home to rest
In that underground mansion alone
Alone by ourselves
Being greeted by peeping sun rays
And the twinkling stars from sky horizons
The croaking frogs from the nearby pond
The dark and threatening night tranquil
The night patrolling nocturnal birds
And the earthly dwellers in search for food.
We have come home to rest
In that underground mansion alone
Alone by ourselves
With our travel bags full of good deeds
Our ebony fresh decorated with bliss
From the sincere earthly battles we conquered
Fighting injustices and championing freedom.
So Maya too has come home to rest
In that underground mansion alone
Alone by herself
With her pride of achievements
Her sword and uniform soaked with blood
From the earthly battles she conquered;
Social injustices
Racial discrimination
Women empowerment
Minority empowerment
Political empowerment
Promotion of unity.
Author’s note: Maya’s tribute is inspired by the late Gambian Surgeon and celebrated poet, Lenrie Peters’ poem, “We Have Come Home.” Till again, Dr. Maya Angelou! May your gentle soul have the best of receptions in the hereafter. Ameen.
