Dakar, Senegal, November 23, 2023 — The West African Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), in collaboration with the Directorate of Early Warning and the Division of facilitation of mediation by the Economic Community of African States West (ECOWAS), as well as the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), is pleased to announce the launch of the regional project “Monitoring, Analysis and Mitigation of Electoral Violence” (EMAM).
The day was marked by the official inaugural ceremony of the project, where the E-MAM project was revealed in its full scope. The ceremony was honoured by the distinguished presence of Dr Onyinye Nkechi ONWUKA, Acting Director of the Directorate ECOWAS early warning; Mr. Moudjib DJINABOU, Business Director UNOWAS Policies, Mr Giovanni SQUADRITO, Head of the regional team West Africa and Lake Chad, representing the European Union and Ms. Levinia ADDAEMENSAH, Deputy Executive Director of WANEP.
With a total budget of €4 million Euros over a period of 36 months, from July 2023 to June 2026, the E-MAM project is funded by the European Union through its instrument NDICI-FPI, theme of Peace, Stability and Conflict Prevention. It covers 11 West African countries with the possibility of extension to other complementary countries. The main objective of the E-MAM project is to contribute to the reduction of electoral violence by strengthening and mobilizing the regional and national capacities necessary for the prevention or mitigation of political violence. The project strives to facilitate and strengthen the early warning implementation process while promoting inclusive response measures to electoral violence and other threats to democracy in targeted countries.
The partners, united in this major project, aspire to collaborate with governments, Election Management Bodies (EMBs), Election Organizations and Civil Society (CSO), personalities and opinion leaders, and West African citizen voters to help improve human security in the region.
