imagesReports reaching Gainako has it that Gambian opposition leaders convened an emergency meeting to discuss on how they can respond and confront President Jammeh on his government’s recent alarming tribal tirade on national television.  The government through its new Secretary General and Minister of Presidential Affairs Momodou Sabally went on national television accusing the largest Mandinka tribe of working with foreign governments to destabilize the country and tarnish the image of the country.

The opposition leaders Omar Amadou Jallow of the PPP, Hamat Bah of NRP, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe of the UDP and a representative of the GMC conveyed an emergency meeting to discuss how to respond to the situation. Reports indicate that the leader of the UDP reached out to PDOIS leadership several times but was asked to send a written request and an agenda for the meeting. PDOIS through its spokesperson said they are still reviewing the merits of the meeting and will respond in due course.

The opposition leaders met at the Fajara Hotel on Tuesday and Wednesday and are scheduled to come up with a communique and a possible press conference tentatively to be held on Thursday October 24th, 2013 at a hotel yet to be decided. They are reported to be planning on touring the country together and informing the people that the alleged tribal sentiments being peddled by the Jammeh administration is irresponsible and out of touch with the reality in the Gambia. It is meant to incite fear and mistrust among the Gambian people who have peacefully coexisted for centuries.  The leaders pledge to take more actions in addition to a press release and grand rallies.
