The murder case of University of The Gambia student, Kebba Secka, who met his untimely death in July 2019 has been postponed until mid-August 2020. The case was set to be heard on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of August 2020 however, a high court vacation has led to a change of date.

Gainako readers will recall that the case held its last sitting on 6th July 2020 before justice Sainabou Wadda Ceesay of the Special Criminal Court.

Just over a week after Kebba’s death, Poliso Magazine published a press release titled “Breakthrough into the murder investigation of Kebba Secka”. The press release only highlighted that “the suspect has been identified as First-Class Constable Lamin Trawally”.

“Lamin Trawally admits he and his colleague attempted to search the deceased which led to a scuffle. He confesses that during the scuffle with the group of boys found smoking cannabis on Tuesday 9th July 2019, he fought and stabbed the deceased with a knife and fled.”

Family calls Poliso Magazine presser “Unprofessional, Inconsiderate and Disrespectful”

The family have refuted those claims in a press conference where a family representative said “the third one and most importantly is the fact that they claim that these boys were found to be smoking cannabis. We think it’s very unprofessional, inconsiderate and disrespectful to Kebba’s family, a dead boy someone who was killed by your own men. You cannot substantiate whether he was smoking or not. No test was done to determine the HTC levels.” said Yusupha Njie.

“And the way we see it is the words of a confessed killer, a rogue Policeman, his words were used as the official statement of the Gambia Police Force. And this is of utmost disrespect to the family” he said.

At this stage the Police had only charged the one suspect, however, Kebba’s family insisted that a second suspect was involved. In reaction, Gainako published an exclusive titled “Where is the second suspect? Says late Kebba Secka’s family”.

On 15th June 2020, Lamin Trawally was charged in court for the murder of Kebba Secka while Sulayman Kijera was charged with accessory to murder. According to witnesses, the second suspect held Kebba from the back while the first accused Lamin Trawally applied the final blow.

Listen to the statement from Kebba Secka’s family representative, Yusupha Njie.
