A motion is prepared by the Government of the Gambia which is expected to be present by the Justice Minister for the increment of the remuneration of each commission member of the Janneh commission to D500, 000.
This was confirmed by a paper circulated at the National on Thursday 20th December 2018, which was expected to be table before law makers. However law makers at the time were deliberating on the motion of the Nomination of membership to the Committee on Human Rights and Constitutional Matters, and the Gambia –Franco Friendship group respectively. This took members a painstaking deliberation for almost the whole day and was not finalized.
The three commission members were receiving D300, 000 and now if the motion is approved finally it means their payment will increase to D500, 000.
The commission was established in July 2017 and was expected to sit for three month for their first sittings and on two occasions the commission was extended in February and May 2018 respectively. The commission is expected to submit their final report to the President in early January 2019.
However some citizens believe that the National Assembly members might not accept the additional remuneration in this crucial moment in time, citing the latest rejection of the more than 1 billion Dalasi supplementary by NAMs.
The commission of Inquiry was established by an act of parliament to probe into the issue of the Former President Yaya Jammeh on his financial dealings and his close associates.
