By Sulayman Shyngle Nyassi Following my most recent revelations with regards to the International criminality of the Jammeh administration, some foolish and gullible Gambians who are running around selling drugs for him, took it upon themselves to violate the rights of individuals they believe to be revealing all that I was writing but I will take this opportunity to send out a very clear warning to all those involved that, we’re not and will not be taking them lightly and now that you are all in custody for attacking my family in Swiss, why not get your boss…

By: Ousainou Mbenga “IF YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW MUCH A TYRANT WILL IMPOSE ON A PEOPLE, FIND OUT HOW MUCH THEY WILL TAKE”. Fredrick Douglas. The past 19 years have been the most painful period in the recent history of our beloved Gambia. The only guaranteed relief from this pain; never to befall us again is ORGANIZATION. In my view, I would rather endure the “pain” and frustrations of building an organization as an instrument for revolutionary progress and prosperity, than endure pain under tyranny and dis-organization in silence. Silence is not a guarantee for safety. In…

By Yero Jallow The three neighbors were friends and they harmonized around the things they shared in common –  travels, social functions and a lot more. One fine day, they set out on a journey headed the same direction but different destinations. They  boarded a car ok and started enjoying the pleasant ride. If not for the road bumps (street police  stops) and breezy humid winds from the nearby hills, the ride was just so nice with music from the  sixties, the kind that will make one forget for a minute about their life challenges. The dog in  excitement…

By Sidi Sanneh The Gambia under Sir Dawda Jawara used to pride itself as a state that was striving to achieve a  level of, what can term as, functional democracy that required the building of new institutions  as well as the strengthening of the old. Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation  (SSHFC), Gambia Ports Authority (GPA), Gambia Commercial and Development Bank (GCDB)  and its offshoot the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), all belonged to the former  category. The Gambian Civil Service, the Judiciary and Parliament were inherited from colonial Britain and thus belonged to the latter category of institution. What the…

By Yero Jallow The noise from the nearby hamlet attracted a lot of onlookers and much to their surprise; the chameleon (Bra Chams) and frog (Bra Froggy) were on it arguing to their teeth. If not for the siren noise of trains and peeping car horns, you will be able to hear the loud mouths disturbing the neighborhood’s piece from the distance. All peaceful neighbors wondered what the deafening noise was all about. The two got onto a brawl after a little tussle on land tenure ownership. Bra Froggy believes he is older than Bra chams and Bra…

SULAYMAN JENG, UK THE GAMBIA: A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE Despite all the doubts harboured on the newly independent Africa’s smallest state, The Gambia, under the eagle eyes of Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara matched on to establish itself as a functioning multiparty democracy. At one point, it was assumed by most of its sceptics that the Gambia will not augur well as an independent state due to the smallness of its size and ailing economic challenges. In his autobiography, KAIRABA, Sir Dawda recounted: “Everyone else, it seemed, got deeper into debt. The country itself was in debt. The government was strenuously…

THE #DIASPORA – An #Unrecognized #Block. By Pata P.J Saidykhan As usual, I was sitting at home minding my business and thought I would grab my routine dose of Gambian News, so I went on reading the local Newspapers. I started with the Daily Observer and I saw a story about our ‘magnanimous’ president ‘negotiating’ the release from immigration detention and repatriation of Gambian Deportees from Angola. $10,000 USD forked out. As important as that story is, it was not as interesting to me as the next. “Ahead of March polls -Bissau authorities begin registration of 35,000 nationals in…

By Mai Ahmad Fatty While we congratulate eighteen young Gambians who were recently enrolled as Legal Practitioners of the Supreme Court of The Gambia, it is imperative to remind them that their Oath to protect and defend the Constitution and other laws of the Land is worthless to the regime of Yaya Jammeh. Be prepared for the worst. While the Vice President ‘lectured’ the newly admitted lawyers on the verve of judicial processes, her government consolidates serially denying innocent Gambians the benefit of that same system she espoused. Her fraudulent defense of government’s respect for legality was being contradicted by…
