The United States is deeply concerned by renewed inter-religious violence in the Central African Republic (CAR). We condemn attacks by both anti-Balaka and Seleka groups in Bangui and the provinces. We are also deeply disturbed by reports that some CAR leaders may be supporting attacks by anti-Balaka and Seleka, respectively, instead of working for peace and reconciliation. Preventing the violence from gaining further momentum and costing more lives will require all of CAR’s leaders, past and present, to be clear in condemning it. We urge CAR’s past and present political leaders – including senior officials in the previous Bozize…

By Yero Jallow ‘‘I can say with confidence and I stand to be challenged, that liver cancer, pancreatic cancer and breast cancer, we have successfully treated; because what we do is we try, for every disease, seven patients and if five out of the seven are treated, then we try again because my objective is always 100 per cent, but if I have six out of seven, I consider it a definitive ‘yes’, we can treat it,’’(Yaya Jammeh, The Point Newspaper, 01/20/2014). It is mindboggling to hear Jammeh’s false claims of having discovered cure for Liver cancer, breast…

By Sidi Sanneh Please, before you start hurling rocks, allow me to explain why I think boosting aid for The Gambia during the Article 8 dialogues between the European Union and The Gambia is not a bad idea, despite the serious human rights issues and serious corruption posed by the current regime. According to reports, the EU is poised to double aid to The Gambia to € 150 million over the next seven years from the last EDF Article 8 dialogues figure of € 75 million.  At the concessionary windows of the World Bank and African Development Bank…

By BY MISHA HUSSAIN DAKAR, Jan 22 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – The European Union may double aid to Gambia to 150 million euros (£122.8 million) over the next seven years, creating a split between EU members on whether to fund countries with poor human-rights records, diplomats said. Gambia has received some 75 million euros of aid over the past six years from the European Development Fund (EDF). But in talks known as Article 8 dialogues, it has shown little interest in engaging with EU policy on governance, diplomats say.
