The much anticipated Anti-Corruption Bill 2019 will be read for the third time tomorrow Wednesday 20th September 2023. The Anti-Corruption Bill went through the consideration stage on Thursday 14th September 2023. The Speaker for the day, Deputy Speaker Hon Seedy SK Njie, mistakenly stated that the Bill would be read for the third time on “Tuesday 20th June 2023” which we have been informed was a slip of the tongue. You can watch the video in the link below.
After speaking to a Deputy Clerk in Parliament we have been informed that the Bill will be read for the third time by Justice Minister Hon Dawda A Jallow tomorrow Wednesday 20th September 2023.
If an efficient Anti-Corruption Bill 2019 is passed tomorrow, this will be a momentous achievement in fighting corruption in The Gambia. According to the Objects and Reasons for the Bill “the Act seeks to repeal The Gambia Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2012; and among other things, seeks to prohibit and prescribe punishment for corruption and other related offences”.
“It establishes the Anti-corruption commission vesting it with the responsibility for investigation and prosecution of offenders.”
“The Act will provide the legal framework to guide the fight against corruption and economic crimes in The Gambia. It provides for a number of strategies to be employed in the fight against corruption. This includes investigation, prosecution, prevention and asset recovery.”
“Provision has also been made for the protection of a person who gives information to the commission in respect of an offence committed or likely to be committed by any other person.”
