The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has published the list of duly nominated candidates for the Local Government By-Elections of 14th May 2022. The list of duly nominated candidates published by the IEC features only three parties namely; the National People’s Party (NPP), the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), the United Democratic Party (UDP) and five Independent Candidates.

The Council positions up for By-Elections are Bundung Six Junction, London Corner, Sanyang and Marakissa Wards. The four positions were announced for By-Elections after four Councillors resigned to contest in the recently concluded 9th April 2022 National Assembly Elections.

In Bundung Six Junction Ward, Councillor Sulayman Jammeh of the APRC resigned to successfully contest for the Bundunka Kunda Parliamentary Seat. At London Corner Ward Councillor Musa Cham of the PDOIS vacated his seat to secure the Serrekunda Parliamentary seat previously occupied by PDOIS Party Leader Hon Halifa Sallah.

However, two other candidates who resigned and contested unsuccessfully for Parliamentary seats are former Councillor Momodou Bojang of the UDP for Sanyang Ward and former Councillor Lamin Jarju of the APRC for Marakissa Ward. All four Councillors who resigned were elected on 12th April 2018 meaning that Council Elections should be held in April 2023 when their five-year term should expire.

The list features a total of 14 candidates of which three are female and eleven are male candidates. Below is the list of duly nominated Candidates from the IEC.
