The United Democratic Party (UDP) held a task force meeting last Saturday, January 25 2014. The aim is to commence a wider consultation on the way forward of the party and the underlying difficulties opposition parties encounter in the tough and intolerable political existence. Party members came from the KMC, Kombos and other regions to commence this very important task of sharing ideas and experiences on issues related to the way forward for the party.
The Meeting was chaired by the party President, Mr Dembo Bonjang. Top UDP executive members shared their thoughts on areas of the political landscape needed to be strengthen and steps the party need to take in competing more effectively, through engagement and regular dialogue.
They identified a key strategy of the dictatorship, which they utilise more effectively is the game to isolate and neutralise key members of the party. The aim is to create a block of committed grass roots and youth wing that will respond to calls in getting politically involve on issues affecting individuals party members.
The task force will also look at ways of creating a formidable working relationship with other opposition parties. A strategy to also enlighten the international committee was also on the agenda, with the need to not suffer in silence. The task force will also advise on the need to end fear in people to stand in solidarity. The continued diverse existence of the party be enhanced further. A summit is also plan to engage more party elders and young members who are undergoing tough economic environment and unemployment.
The task force will also examine the transition plans and provide tangible advise on competent and committed members who should step up and play key roles. The prosecution of party members unjustifiably, the imprisonment of senior executive member based on witch hunt and the targeting of youth leaders are areas which will dominate the task force working.
UDP Militants welcome this development of continued engagement by the party, giving forces to the people, in them advising on how things should be done. The task force is full of committed elders who has an in-depth political knowledge and are determine to boost morale and provide a solid outreach with the wider communities.
The Party Secretary General, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe commend the many people who responded to the party’s call, and advise that, they remain patriotic, committed and fearless in standing up for their country. He advise the task force to make radical observations and involve youths at all levels of the consultation. He warn that,” if we don’t stand together and stand firm, we will lose our formidable force to unjust prosecutions.” He further blame the misuse of the criminal justice system in being a catalyst for the jailing of many Gambians without due regards to fairness and the rule of law. “It is now up to people to stand firm and work together in determining the future of the party and the country.” He advise them that, many people hopes are on them, and more meetings should be organise to create continued determination
