Barely few months after her abrupt escape from the corridors of harm in Banjul, the famous ‘Fatou Show’ has resurfaced online through the popular Senegalese online site Seneweb.com. The most popular television show in Gambia “The Fatou Show” was yanked from GRTS when she was arrested by the government and accused of passing information to an online media. She fled the country for safety and is now resident in the United States. The ‘Fatou Show’ will air every Thursday from 3:00pm to 4:00pm US Eastern Time; 8:00pm Gambian Time. Fatou broke the news on her face book page announcing to her fans that she is all set to continue her famous show online and radio.
The show according to Fatou would be a continuation of her diverse coverage of issues ranging from civic education, women’s affairs, Arts and culture with heavy emphasis on current social, political and economic issues affecting the Senegambia region. A part of the show will also be dedicated to promoting peace, harmony, friendship and mutual respect between Gambia and Senegal – two sister nations that are inseparable both in culture and tradition. Fatou believes that the unique culture that exists between Senegal and the Gambia must be nurtured and embraced for the greater good. She will also focus on promoting freedom of speech, democracy and rule of law and hopes that Gambia will take a page from Senegalese Democratic values and free society.
As the common saying goes you can kill a person but never their idea; though Fatou unexpectedly abandoned her fans who were left wondering what happened to their favorite show on television in Gambia, here comes the Queen of Gambian Television sprinting to a new and more diverse market. The Senegalese website Seneweb.com has millions of readers and listeners and is a magnet for music lovers. The site and its affiliate radios are home to several famous young Senegalese musicians such as Ida Samba, Titi, Vivian, the master musician Yussou Ndour & Mbye Gaye Faye just to name a few.
Fatou therefore could not have landed a better platform to build more fan base and promote Senegambia culture through her show. Many of her fans and Gambian activists hope that Fatou will use her platform to help educate Gambians on their political rights, freedom of speech, human rights and expose some of the social and political injustices she has witnessed in Gambia. Music and entertainment is no doubt one of the most effective ways of delivering pertinent and educating information to the masses. It is hoped that with her new found freedom, Fatou will utilize her show free of government interference through her famous guest to breach the gap between Senegalese and Gambians. Senegalese Musicians has allegedly played a critical role in promoting impunity in Gambia and hope that Fatou will quiz her guest and sensitize them against aiding and abiding injustices meted on their Gambian counterparts.
