GDC’s Youth Mobilizer, MC Cham Jnr. said, “Mamma Kandeh of the GDC is not working with Jammeh and will never work with him; no alliance with APRC and no relationship.” Asked why the rife rumours of partnership between GDC and the APRC, he said, “We are from the APRC and it is very common to accuse us of being APRC. I think they should welcome us in the political scene. We are not talking to Saul Badjie or any other APRC regarding a partnership. Mamma Kandeh and Barrow are brothers and friends and Mamma was the first to congratulate Barrow after the elections. GDC made its position very clear in its press releases.”
On his take on the Gainako story, MC believes that Gainako is not friendly with GDC, and even followed during the campaign where Associate Editors, firebrands commentator Demba Baldeh and Mamalinguerre Sarr “Good Day Gambia” came very hard at the GDC in radio deliverance. “Gainako’s story is not fair to us,” Mr. Cham said. This reporter put it to Mr. Cham that Gainako covered a lot of GDC stories, including hosting Deputy GDC Yusupha Jaiteh, Diaspora activist Saihou Mballow, and a lot more. In reaction, Mamalinguerre Sarr said, “We are not hostile to GDC. We gave them coverage. When we get information from the ground, we report it in good faith, and that is what we have been doing. Some of their party members insulting us must get their facts right.” In fact information Gainako is privy to reveals that Mamma Kandeh holds private meeting without consulting the GDC executive, and this gives rife rumor that he (Mamma Kandeh) is trying to cut a deal with the APRC, to be the Vice President.
Mr. Cham said they were expelled from the APRC. Asked if he would have been an APRC supporter if not expelled, he said he is GDC, “We (I, Mamma Kandeh, Tina Faal) were expelled. I contested the Jeswang constituency in 2012 as Independent Candidate, the APRC got 5000 votes and I got 4771 votes.”
Mr. Cham argued that many are dissmissive of the GDC, though according to him, Barrow won under a coalition, so Mamma and the GDC is the most vibrant political party in the Gambia. Asked if he is up for Jeswang, he said, “If chosen by the GDC, I am ready to get the national assemble seat for Jeswang.” Asked why some of their party members are quick to disrespect others in naming calling and crying foul uncenessarily, he said, “Yero, i was with you and we didn’t have any problems other than disagreeing in politics. Those that use insults and unethical behavior do not represent the GDC and Mamma Kandeh.”
In the end, Mr. Cham said he looks forward to having a good relationship with Gainako and the media fraternity, “Politics won’t divide us,” he said.
