The Book Review program is one of many programs and activities that we do, during our annual programs. The idea behind it is, we try to put some academic programs along with the cultural and social programs for the entire community; and for those who travel from Africa, Europe, and the U.S. for this Gambian reunion of friends, and family.
This idea of having this book review is to try to institutionalize among the yearly programs, to cater to those who come not to party or socialize , but gain some knowledge and inspiration from our scholars. The Atlanta July 4th annual reunion is one of the largest in the Diaspora of Gambians and friends of Gambia.
Couple of years ago, we did a book review of Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara’s book -‘KAIRABA’
and he was guest of honor to this event; Dr. Sulayman Nyang of Howard University was the reviewer. This was one of the most successful, with the largest crowd in attendance.Prior to this, many book reviews were held by various Gambian authors with recent publication, such as Dr. Ablai Saine, Halifa Sallah, Yankuba Mamburay, Prof. Donald Wright of New York Univ. etc. We are trying hard to make sure we have it as part of our yearly reunion, along with the other programs, which are more of a social, atlethic and cultural nature.

Invitations will also be extended to elders like author and Professor Dr. Lamin Sanneh of Yale University. If you are an author, or writer who have recently published a book; that you wish to do a review of, please let us know in advance so that we can include you in the program.Due to the list of reviewers and the amount of time allocated for this program; we advise that we need to be contacted before June 10th 2013.We cannot garauntee that all who request it will be given a spot on the program, however there are venues to sell your books in venues like the Sunday Park picnic etc., which does not require any reviews from individual authors.
We will later on send a list to the online media, for an update on those who are coming to do reviews of their books, as soon as we can.If you, or someone you know wants to do his/her book review; please pass on the information as soon as possible.
Authors living in the Gambia, Senegal, or elsewhere on the continent; who want to come and join us for this program, need to contact us as soon as possible in case they need official invitations from AGERA to come. This may expedite their travel plans, Visas etc. if necessary.
It is also important to note that AGERA does not pay for anyones travel expenses and/or lodgings, this is the sole responsibility of the individual author/authors.It also does not charge, sell or derive any financial gains from the sale of books by the authors.
The main idea behind it as stated earlier, is to bring Gambian scholars, academics, students,
workers, and the community from all works of life together; to share the many varied topics talked about and addressed by Gambia’s own sons and daughters in numerous publications. We hope that you will join AGERA from July 5th to the 7th in Atlanta, Georgia U.S.A.
