Over the weekend 27th/28th June news of more Presidential Directives have surfaced from Gambia. This time Jammeh has decided to dip his hands into Gambia’s Fishing industry. Its alleged that any fishing trawler operating in Gambian waters must give up 10% of their catch to the President’s office after paying a monthly licence and all the necessary tax to operate a business in Gambia.
The biggest news regarding this latest development is involving one Fishing Trawler from Senegal name Ebenezer. The shipping Trawler is said to be under Navy guard at the Warfi Njago for over five days now. This is because they failed to give up 10% of their catch as demanded by the President’s Office. Its alleged that the Captain of the Fish Trawler named Ebenezer is currently in Mile Two for failing to adhere to the Presdidential directive to give up 10% of his catch to the Presidents office.
Its just unbelievable that any business can be expected to thrive under such conditions. Being forced to give up part of their daily fish catch. Its understood that Jammeh is going into the Fishing industry by seizing people’s goods for his own benefit. Other news have emanated recently of Jammeh seizing people’s fishing businesses and goods and selling it for his gain. This is nothing short of criminal and similar to how drug barons operate added a commentator.
It was also announced over GRTS that the government’s mouthpiece that Jammeh has allowed Hussein Tajudeen to continue doing business in the Gambia. Why Mr. Tajudeen was asked to stop doing business in the first place is anyone’s imagination. The business environment has become toxic in Gambia as the President personally competes with private businesses in almost every sector.
