Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has returned to ground zero in New York where he was shouted down and embarrassed last year during the UN 68th Annual General Assembly. The embattled Gambian leader who constantly makes negative headlines across the world, was determined not to surrender visiting the country he loves the most – the United States to activists determined to make life uneasy for him whenever he steps outside of the Gambia.
Many thought that after facing consecutive embarrassments in the hands of activists in the United States last year and less than two months ago, Jammeh would delegate his vice President to come to New York for the General Assembly.. But No. knowing the arrogance of the Gambian leader and the precedence it will set for him to fail to show up in the US after the last incident, his ego wouldn’t let him stay away from another embarrassment. He cannot stand the narrative that he has been kept away by protesters which will soften his iron fist grip on the Gambian nation. So come rain or hail Jammeh has defied any challenge and is back in New York.
Gambian activists on the other hand have also vowed to continue their protest where they left off in Washington DC. Many activists who spoke to our reporter insisted that not showing up in New York to protest against Jammeh is not an option. One prominent protester who was involved in the last episodes said not showing up would mean that activists have been intimidated by Jammeh and his securities after they attacked protesters in Washington DC. “This is not going to happen and we will not surrender our freedom in Gambia and in the United States to Jammeh and his vulnerable security entourage”.
As a result, the stage is set for a rematch of New York round two – operation against the Gambian leader. The activists reportedly have already confirmed the location of the President and have deployed their arsenals for a live confrontation. As the lines are drawn last year’s major players are noticeably absent, some behind bars and others dismissed.. Momodou Sabally is held in incommunicado, while Tangara, Susan Wafaa Ogoo along with other security officers who were in the front lines last year are no where to be seen. It sets a clear example that Yahya Jammeh does not deserve to fight for no matter the situation. He has consistently sacrifice his men and women and is sure to repeat the same with the current entourage. Gainako and other sister networks are ready and set to bring you live coverage of the events as they happen on both radio and print. Stayed tuned for another episode… Official confirmation of the hotel and the President’s schedule will follow short…
